Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about getting started, training, and membership at Skyward Fencing.

GETTING STARTED

Do I need any experience to start?

1

No experience is needed. Most people start as complete beginners, and our classes are designed to teach everything from the ground up.

What should I wear to my first class?

2

Athletic clothing, ideally with shorts and a clean pair of athletic shoes. We provide the necessary fencing equipment for beginners.

Do I need to buy equipment right away?

3

No. Equipment is provided for new fencers. As you continue training, we can help guide you on what to purchase and when.

How do I get started?

4

The best way to start is by scheduling a complimentary class. From there, we can help you choose the right class or training path.

CLASSES

How do classes work?

1

Classes are structured to teach fundamentals like footwork, bladework, and timing in a group setting. They are the starting point for most fencers.

What age groups do you offer?

2

We offer classes for:

Ages 6–8 — Ages 9–12 — Ages 13+ / Adults

How do I sign up for classes?

3

Classes are available through Direct Enrollment with Skyward Fencing and various Local Park District Programs. We can help direct you to the best option based on your location and schedule.

How much do classes cost?

4

Classes are $30 per session and are sold in packages (typically 8 or 12 classes). Additional family members or additional training days are available at a reduced rate of $21 per class.

MEMBERSHIP

Do I need a membership to start?

1

No. Most people begin with classes before transitioning into membership.

What does membership include?

2

Membership provides access to open fencing sessions and a consistent training environment where fencers can practice, fence, and continue improving.

How much does membership cost?

3

$90/month for an individual. $60/month for additional family members. Both monthly and annual payment options are available.

Can membership be my starting point?

4

Yes. Fencers with prior experience or those joining from other clubs often begin directly with membership.

Do I have to compete if I become a member?

5

No. Competition is optional. Many members train for personal improvement or enjoyment of the sport.

To become a member, do I need a USA fencing membership?

6

You do not need a USA Fencing membership to try a class or get started. However, an active USA Fencing membership is required to become a full member at Skyward.

COMPETITION & USA FENCING

Do I need a USA Fencing membership?

1

You do not need a USA Fencing membership to try a class or get started. However, an active USA Fencing membership is required to become a full member at Skyward and to participate in sanctioned competitions.

What type of USA Fencing membership do I need?

2

Most fencers choose either Access Membership (Local Competition Eligibility) or Competitive Membership (Regional and National Competition Eligibility). We’re happy to help guide you based on your goals.

How do I sign up for competitions?

3

Competition registration is typically handled through USA Fencing or local platforms like AskFred. We can help you navigate this once you're ready.

TRAINING & PROGRESSION

When should I start private lessons?

1

Private lessons can be added at any time, but most fencers begin once they have a basic foundation from classes or want to accelerate their improvement.

How often should I train?

2

It depends on your goals. Some fencers train once per week, while others train multiple days per week through a combination of classes, membership, and lessons.

What does progression look like at Skyward?

3

Most fencers follow a general path, starting with classes and moving into membership with private lessons and eventually competition (for those with the drive to achieve their highest level) but many choose to start with membership.

We’re happy to help. Reach out anytime or come try a class to see if Skyward is the right fit.
